Born in London, Jake Clennell studied and worked as a photographer before moving to New York to pursue his career in film.
Clennell worked as a Director/DP filming the negotiation and release of American hostages in Iraq as well as covering famine relief operations by Islamic charity organizations in war torn Sudan with American icon Muhammad Ali. These were experiences that impacted him deeply, helping to forge a perspective that is reflected in his feature documentary work to this day, in a career which has taken him all over the world.
Described as having a “Scrupulously non judgmental eye,” (Variety) and his work as “Underscoring, with great poignancy, the extremes of emotional turmoil” (New York Times), Clennell’s recent film “The Great Happiness Space” has had wide international distribution and critical recognition. Called “An extraordinary and eye-opening film” (Guardian, UK) and featured in an article in the London Times entitled “Heartbreaking works of staggering genius”, The film has been shown at the MOMA in New York in conjunction with the IFP Gotham awards. Other honors include receiving “Best Feature Documentary” at the 60th Edinburgh IFF and nominations for “Best British Doc” and “Distinguished Feature Doc” by the British Independent Film Awards and the IDA.
An experienced cinematographer, Clennell also enjoys close collaboration with many talented filmmakers, including a number of Oscar & Emmy winning/nominated producers and directors. He has photographed a long list of some of the most talented and influential people of our times.He employs a refined eye and a sure technical hand on a broad range of productions, such as multi camera concert films, music videos, commercials, aerial photography and intimate verite documentary.
Jake started Clennell films in 2006 as a production company for his own feature documentary projects. Clennell Films also provides services to other production companies including camera and lighting equipment, editing facilities and access to a network of trusted freelance crew.
